Function

Support positioning: mainly used to support the rudder bar, ensure that the rudder bar remains in the correct position during the ship's navigation, so that the rudder blade can rotate left and right with the rudder bar, thereby controlling the ship's heading.
Load bearing: bear the radial load caused by the hydrodynamic force acting on the rudder blade, and the axial load generated by the gravity of the rudder system, to ensure the stable operation of the rudder system.
Ensure watertightness: prevent water from entering the ship from the connection between the rudder bar and the hull, ensure the watertightness of the hull, and maintain the safety and stability of the ship.
Auxiliary rotation: provide good conditions for the rotation of the rudder bar, reduce friction and resistance during the rotation process, so that the rudder bar can rotate flexibly and realize the steering operation of the ship.

Structural composition

Bearing part: usually composed of a thrust roller bearing and a vertical sliding bearing. The ball bearing is responsible for bearing the weight of the rudder, while the vertical bearing is used to bear the lateral force.
Sealing device: such as stuffing box, etc., used to ensure the sealing between the upper rudder bearing and the rudder stock to prevent water leakage.
Connecting parts: including flanges, bolts, etc., used to fix the upper rudder bearing on the deck of the steering gear room and connect it with the rudder stock, rudder blade and other parts.
Lubrication system: Some upper rudder bearings are also equipped with lubrication devices, such as oil filling holes, oil tanks, etc., which reduce the friction between the bearing and the rudder stock and reduce wear by injecting lubricating oil.

Installation position

The upper rudder bearing is generally installed on the deck of the steering gear room, located at the upper end of the rudder stock.

Application characteristics

In modern large ships, usually only the upper rudder bearing is set, which bears all the weight and force. In addition to the upper rudder bearing, the rudder of a small ship is equipped with a rudder pin (rudder pin) at the bottom of the rudder blade.
